As clean and sustainable energy conversion devices, hydrogen PEM fuel cells are expected to play dominant role in future clean energy solutions for various applications, particularly for electric vehicles (EVs). However, the high cost of Pt catalyst is one of the main obstacles for the widespread commercialization of PEM fuel cells. Therefore, developing highly efficient low-Pt and non-platinum group metal (Non-PGM) catalysts are one of the key solutions to solve the above-mentioned challenges. Among the Non-PGM catalysts, Fe/N/C catalysts are considered as one of the most promising ORR catalysts. Dodelet at INRS have made one major breakthrough on Fe/N/C catalyst, with activity and performance approaching to that of Pt [1,2]. However, the durability of all the reported Non-PGM catalysts (including Fe/N/C) is still insufficient for practical applications and its performance decay mechanism is still unclear. Very recently, we made a systematic study to verify whether iron is at the origin of the first rapid decay (stability problem) of the Fe/N/C catalyst for ORR in PEM fuel cells, which is important to find better ways to improve the durability of Fe/N/C catalysts [3,4]. Moreover, we also developed other types of novel nanostructured Non-PGM catalysts for ORR in fuel cells [5-14]. In addition, thermodynamic stability and DFT evaluations have been employed to study the Fe-based ORR catalysts [14,15].On the other hand, a series of low-Pt nanostructured electrocatalysts, synthesize by green chemistry and atomic layer deposition (ALD), including nanowires, nanotubes and single atoms, for fuel cells will also be presented [16,17]. In the end, I will also briefly introduce our recent work on developing high-performance bifunctional ORR/OER catalysts for Zn-air batteries [18-24].
孙书会教授现为加拿大国立科学院-能源、材料、通信研究所正教授。孙教授的主要研究方向是功能纳米材料在清洁能源和环境中的应用，主要从事燃料电池，金属空气电池，锂/钠/锌离子电池，CO2还原和太阳能水解制氢的研究和应用。在Energy Environmental Science, Advanced Materials, Adv. Energy Mater., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Nano Energy, Angew. Chemie., Advanced Science, Adv. Fun. Mat.等期刊已发表SCI论文120多篇；主编科学著作2部和发表科学著作章节11 篇，同时获得2个美国专利授权。
孙教授与工业界进行了广泛合作，与加拿大巴拉德动力系统、美国通用汽车公司、日本丰田汽车等公司在新能源汽车方面有紧密合作。近年来先后获得世界青年科学院Fellow (2017), 美国电化学会-丰田青年科学家 (2017)，国际纯粹与应用化学联合会 (IUPAC) 青年科学家(2017)，加拿大总督学术金奖 (2012)等奖项。现任国际能源科学院(IOAEES)副总裁，Electrochemical Energy Review的执行主编，Editor of Catalysts, 以及7个国际学术期刊的编委。
